36 industries save 5,709 cr under PAT scheme in AP

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) has identified 143 industrial units for bringing under Perform, Achieve & Trade (PAT) as part of drive to achieve energy efficiency.

As many as 85 industrial units from sectors of pharma, engineering, automobile, ceramics and food & fisheries have been identified to bring under the PAT scheme. As many as 36 large industrial units saved energy worth Rs5,709 crore in the last few years through the PAT scheme.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Energy Minister Pedireddy Ramachandra Reddy are keen on energy efficiency that helps in ensuring 24x7 reliable power. PAT scheme is being implemented to enhance the capability of effective utilization of energy in industries.

Based on the comprehensive energy study, APSECM, State Designated Agency (SDA) of AP and Energy Department have identified around 143 industrial units (Designated Consumers (DCs)) that have potential to become designated consumers from the sectors that have already been under the PAT scheme.

While releasing the report on the PAT scheme, the Chief Secretary said they have identified industrial units from chlor-alkali, commercial buildings (hotels, hospitals and airports), aluminium, cement, steel, spinning and textiles, and petrochemicals.

The Chief Secretary directed APSECM to propose to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for inclusion in the list of potential Industrial units for consideration as New Designated Consumers in AP.

While discussing with Special Chief Secretary, Energy K Vijayanand and officials of APSECM on various energy conservation activities in the State, the Chief Secretary, who is also the Chairman of APSECM, said that it (PAT) was an excellent case study in the area of energy efficiency as 36 large industrial units in the State under the scheme. They achieved savings of 0.818 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE) energy worth Rs5,709 crore in the last few years by implementing energy efficiency measures under the PAT scheme, while the savings through PAT at national level was around 24.5 MTOE.

This helps in reducing energy intensity, production cost and increase productivity in industries. This was possible because of the combined efforts of the energy and industries departments which is the best example for all other departments to implement energy efficiency to reduce their energy consumption in their respective departments, he said.

The Chief Secretary said that as part of its objective to provide a healthier environment and enhance living standards of people by implementing environmental-friendly policies in the State, the AP Government strongly consider the energy efficiency (EE) & energy conservation (EC) as a flagship program that plays a key role in reducing carbon emissions and energy intensity on the State economy.
